DAIRY

The dairy product portion of the food pyramid is a good source of calcium required for growth and normal development of the body.  However, they are also high in fat.  Aged cheeses, milk and ice cream are very high in fat. These products contain animal fat so there is wide speculation on the advantages of dairy products. Choose low fat varieties such as skim or 1% fat milk, or ice milk.   Some medical researchers can find no link between milk and it’s effect on preventing osteoporosis.  In fact, some studies indicate it may be harmful in the areas of osteoporosis, heart disease and certain cancers.

  The Asian food pyramid doesn’t include dairy products and that culture is known to suffer much less from these diseases compared to the American food diet. Cornell and Harvard University researchers have teamed up with other experts to assist the non-profit foundation, Oldways Preservation & Exchange Trust, unveil an official Asian Diet Pyramid. It reflects the traditional, plant-based rural diets of Asia, which research increasingly shows to be linked to much lower rates of certain cancers, heart disease, obesity and, in some cases, osteoporosis and other chronic, degenerative diseases than those found in the United States.
